Search and Rescue in the Barents Sea : 20.10.2018 (12:00Z - 15:00Z)

Dear ATC and pilots! Special Operations Department of Russian Federation and Kazakhstan invites all pilots to participate in the second international SO event CAT-A "Search and rescue in the Barents Sea" on 20th October at 12:00-15:00 UTC (15:00-18:00 MSK).

The An-24 aircraft flew a charter flight from the Norwegian airport Alta to the Russian airport Arkhangelsk with 34 passengers and 5 crew on board. At the entrance to the Murmansk FIR the aircraft began a sharp descent and around the Rybachy Peninsula disappeared from the ATC radar. Approximately at the same time, fishing vessels reported the sounds of a low-flying aircraft, and some of the sounds resembled a swat or explosion, but they could not see anything since there was a strong fog. After the appearance of information about the missing aircraft, a Search and Rescue Unit was created, which includes EMERCOM of Russia and private pilots.
